Have you heard of Memory Jars?

Memory jars and boxes are a great way to engage with someone with mild to moderate dementia and prompts them to speak about memories which might be hard for them to access on their own.

The activity of making a jar or even a memory box is also a wonderful way for family to explore their loved one being their old self again. A lot of friends and family of people with dementia often say, ‘they were with us again’ and, ‘all of a sudden they lit up’.

Here is an example of what a memory jar could look like!

Things you could put in a memory jar or box:

  • Newspaper Clippings

  • Photos

  • CDs/Tapes of favourite songs

  • Letters

  • Props from a certain point in time or outing

  • Trip souvenirs

  • Tools or items they used to use all the time

  • Parts of a musical instrument

There are unlimited items and ideas you could come up with to keep in your loved one’s memory jar. Make sure to keep it in a space that is easily accessible and right in the centre of activity to spark memory and joy in your loved one. It is a great opportunity for connection.

If you feel inspired to make a memory jar, we would love for you to share it with us if you wish, or share some of your ideas, by emailing us at hello@bestlife.org.uk
